What to Expect from Sarah Silverman's New Weekly Hulu Series

"I'm hoping with this show to connect with un-like-minded people."

"We will absolutely be taking about doody," Sarah Silverman said of her new weekly show coming to Hulu.

She discussed the pitch for I Love You, America at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour. "I'm hoping with this show to connect with un-like-minded people," Silverman said, "It's a fun challenge. What I realize is it doesn't have to be a, 'Look at this deep moment we did where we connected with these people and it's really smart and it's moving and look at it.' But what is really important is that it will be funny and silly, and it's aggressively dumb, which is my favorite kind of comedy. Anything smart that's in there will be served in a big, fat, bready sandwich of super, super dumb, because that's how I like my comedy."

Silverman, who's starring in and executive producing the series, said it's not exactly focused on politics though. "It's not like we deal with politics or politicians. The way in which it's political is everything is political right now. By virtue of it being made in this moment in time, everything is political," she explained.

I Love You, America isn't about "gotcha" kind of humor or poking fun at people with different viewpoints either. Executive producer Adam McKay said they're not about pitting sides against each other either: "One of the things about this show is that we want to get back to a grounded place. We're not looking at left versus right. We're looking at corruption versus honesty. We’re looking at the good of the whole versus the good of the few."

The thesis of the show is everybody wants to be loved and be seen. The sentiment will be particularly explored in field segments where Sarah travels around America to interact with those who may have differing viewpoints. Silverman will meet with people not for the sake of taking jabs at those differences, but just to meet them. They made it a point to look for unique places and get out of their comfort zones.

For example, Silverman's going to have dinner with a family in Louisiana who have never met a Jew. "I'm not looking to make them look like a**holes," Silverman said. She continued, "I think maybe if I were to say a mission statement for the show in terms of these field pieces, it's exposing the fact that we are actually the same. We're all the same. We may be listening to two different sets of lies right now. We may be getting our facts from very different places in a time where truth has no currency and facts don’t change minds, but I think comedy at its best can get people’s porcupine needles to go down."

In the studio, I Love You, America will feature a focus group comprised of 12 people from all walks of life who will be present on stage throughout the season. They'll be accessible to Silverman in the same way a house band would be on a talk show, so she can refer to them and have back and forth exchanges.

I Love You, America will premiere on Hulu on Thursday, October 12, 2017.
