Fox Withdraws From Comic-Con Over Piracy Concerns

Could Disney be next?

In a surprising move, 20th Century Fox has withdrawn from appearing at this July's San Diego Comic-Con.

The studio was expected to promote the Assassin's Creed movie there, but they are said to be concerned any footage screened in Hall H would then leak online as happened last year with X-Men: Apocalypse.

Fox reportedly "feels it cannot prevent the piracy of custom trailers and exclusive footage routinely screened for fans in attendance, an individual familiar with the decision told TheWrap. ... The studio will be accounted for in smaller events, like their DreamWorks Animation collaboration Trolls, a second individual close to the studio told TheWrap, who added that footage they would show would be unfinished and far from release."

In recent months, the Assassin's Creed movie and Kernel have been promoting a chance for a fan to win a trip to San Diego Comic-Con, which suggested the Ubisoft game-to-film was going to have a presence there.

TheWrap adds that Disney may also skip this year's Comic-Con, but that isn't confirmed. However, between Star Wars Celebration and Disney's own D23 Expo next summer, the studio has other avenues availbel to tout their upcoming movies to fans and the general public should they also withdraw from Comic-Con.
