Amazon is continuing its push into genre television.
According to Deadline, Amazon is developing TV shows based on Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time novels and Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Deadline reported these developments in a larger story about Amazon acquiring the rights to turn Iain M. Banks' Culture series into a television series, and no other details were announced.
IGN previously reported that Jordan's Wheel of Time had found its showrunner, Rafe Judkins. Judkins, a former Survivor contestant, has written for Marvel's Agents of SHIELD and Chuck.
Judkins tweeted a photo in January of well-worn copies of the first three books in the Jordan fantasy series. He captioned the photo, "There are neither beginnings or endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time but digging out my old (very well read, ha) copies of the book is certainly A beginning," along with the hashtags #wheeloftime and #thedragonreborn.
The Dark Tower was recently released as a feature film starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey last August. Late last year, The Walking Dead's Glen Mazzara took on showrunner duties for the in-development Dark Tower TV series. For our thoughts in the film, read IGN's The Dark Tower review.
No release date for either series has been set, and there have been no announcements from Amazon about the creative teams behind the shows.
Amazon is also currently developing a TV series based on J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. The studio ordered multiple seasons of the series late last year.
