This week's episode of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, "Rise and Shine," took us straight into the heart of the entire season - the fated destruction of Earth itself - while also filling us in on Hydra's sinister schemes post-first Avengers movie.
In a busy, bustling episode, that also included our first look at Yo-Yo with her robotic arms from the comics, we learned that it was, in fact, Daisy Johnson who destroyed the world in the future timeline where our heroes spent the first half of the season. But not just any Daisy...a Daisy who'd been turned into a super-soldier via special infusion chamber designed by Daniel Whitehouse.
In flashbacks, we watched Hale grow up in a sort of secret underground Hydra academy - the lair where she and her daughter Ruby now operate from - under the tutelage of Whitehall and the scorn of classmate Wolfgang von Strucker (also baby Sitwell was awesome!). There she would learn that, despite getting top marks, she'd be used as the surrogate mother for an offspring perfectly designed for the chamber.
Yep, a lot of information flew in out faces this week. After the Chitauri invasion, Hydra reached out to the stars and made an alliance with an alien horde called "The Confederacy" in exchange for protection against some type of oncoming "war." Is this Agents of SHIELD's way of possibly tying into Avengers: Infinity War? Perhaps. We don't know much about the supposed upcoming incursion other than the fact that there are "war ships."
Regardless, Hale now has reservations against Ruby becoming the first person since Steve Rogers to successfully undergo super-soldier treatment. She actually agreed with Coulson that Ruby lacked "heart." She wants it to be Quake and she wants the ashes of Hydra to team up with the remnants of SHIELD for a stand against the Confederacy (with the intention being that they double-cross them once the "war" is over).
It's a lot to take in, yes, but all of this also really helps shape Season 5 as a whole. The looming alien battle (which could possibly be the Kree assault Kasius spoke of) is the reason Daisy gets overloaded with power. She always wondered how she could ever become an actual "destroyer of worlds" and it all goes back to Cap.
However, given Ruby's disdain for her mother (which she seemed to share with Alex), her lack of Rogers' heart, and her "kill your idol" obsession with Daisy, it feels like she's going to try and usurp the super-solider throne. She's going to cut in line and get all up in that chamber and then become uber-powerful. Of course, that wouldn't explain how she'd automatically get the ability to quake things apart, but it just seems like she's not going to take too kindly to getting passed over for the thing she was specifically created for.
So what did you all think? "Rise and Shine" had a lot going on. We saw where Talbot's been this whole time, Simmons told Fitz about Deke being their grandson, Peter Mensah popped up as that shadowy Confederacy alien, Qovas - it was a very important hour. Most importantly though, how do you think the Earth won't blow up? How does it get thwarted? And when that happens, do we lose Deke? Simmons seems strangely confident that she and Fitz are a surefire hit when everyone's currently trying to stop the earth from cracking open. Deke only gets born in a timeline where the world spilts into shards.
