Harley Quinn Gets New Powers and Creative Team

Smashing fools across the universe.

This summer, fan favorite DC villain/anti-hero Harley Quinn will be getting a new look, and new powers, as a new creative team takes over the popular comic series.

Beginning with Harley Quinn issue No. 45, which will hit physical and digital shelves this July, Sam Humphries, who previously worked on Nightwing and Green Lanterns, will be the series' new writer, according to The Washington Post. John Timms is set to illustrate the series.

According to Humphries, the upcoming run will see DC villain Granny Goodness offer Harley a spot on the Female Furies of Apokolips, and Harley's decision will be part of the central theme of Humphries' arc. "Harley is a wild card and a survivor," Humphries said, "Does she [continue to] look out for other people or does she look out for number one?"

Harley will gain new powers from a hammer she obtains on Apokolips. The hammer is inspired by the art of Jack Kirby, who created the idea for Apokolips. Take a look at the hammer, and Harley's new look, in the art below.

“When she grabs this Kirby-infused hammer, it’s going to give her powers like she’s never had before. It’s going to be unlike any other hammers she’s ever had before and she’s a hammer enthusiast,” Humphries said. “We’re going to see Harley use that hammer to kick a lot of [butt], but we’re also going to see her wrestle over what it means to take on that kind of power.”

Humphries said writing for Harley, a "top-tier character" for DC, even comes with "a mandate that allows me to exact a lot of mayhem on the comics page."
