The price and release date for the HTC Vive Pro were announced today, and you can pre-order your own starting right now. HTC also announced the price of the original Vive is dropping to $499 permanently, so if you'd rather save money on the best VR headset on the market (at least until the Pro releases), this is a great price.
The full details:
The HTC Vive Pro will be released on April 3 for $799, and you can preorder it on Amazon or the official Vive website. The biggest improvement over the original HTC Vive is the Pro's enhanced resolution. The HTC Vive Pro has two OLED displays with a combined resolution of 2880x1600, compared to the original Vive's resolution of 2160x1200.
Ergonomics have also been improved over the original Vive, with a new strap that better balances the headset and is easier to adjust for glass-wearers. It's also better at keeping out light, so you stay more immersed in the experience.
Audio improvements include better 3D audio headphones, as well as dual mics that allow for both noise cancellation and Alert Mode and Conversation Mode, so you can still hear your real-world surroundings.
Running the HTC Vive Pro calls for a pretty powerful computer, but nothing too outrageous. The big difference between the original and the Pro is the Pro no longer supports HDMI, so you need a card with DisplayPort 1.4 capabilities. You can test your PC with a downloadable tool on the HTC Vive Pro site, but in a nutshell you'll need at least an Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 and at least NVDIA GeForce GTX1060 or AMD Radeon RX480.
The $799 HTC Vive Pro doesn't include accessories. That means no controllers, no base stations, and no wireless adapter (which hasn't released yet anyway). It does include a free 6-month subscription to Vive Subscription, so you can start playing games right away. However, that is a limited-time offer and is only good for new HTC Vive Pro units purchased before June of this year. You can use a normal PC controller, but the best experience is with the dedicated Vive controllers.
With the announcement of the HTC Vive Pro price and release date, HTC lowered the price on the original unit to $499. That's a great price for the best VR headset on the market today, and, importantly, it comes with a pair of controllers and a copy of Fallout 4 VR meaning you're ready to go right out of the box. If you don't mind having last-gen technology, this is a fantastic deal on the best way to experience VR right now.
