How Justice League's End Credits Set Up Future Movies

Full SPOILERS about what's revealed during the closing credits of the DC movie!

Warning: FULL SPOILERS ahead for Justice League!

There are two end credits scenes in Justice League. The first is a mid-credits scene involving two members of the Justice League, while the second scene occurs at the very end of the credits and sets up potential big future developments in DC’s movieverse.

Justice League's mid-credits scene sees the Flash and Superman gearing up for a good-natured race in the countryside to determine who’s fastest. The foot race offers Flash a chance to fully test his abilities against the only other being who could possibly match him. The stakes? A superhero brunch. The scene ends just as the two superheroes begin their race.

The whole scene is an homage to the many “Fastest Man Alive” races between Flash and Superman from DC Comics lore. And as has happened several times during such races in the comics, this Justice League scene leaves the outcome and its winner unresolved.

Check out the slideshow below for a look back at all the races between Flash and Superman throughout DC Comics history and in other media:

In the scene after the credits, we discover Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor has escaped Arkham Asylum - where you may recall Batman told Lex he was being transferred to at the end of Batman v Superman. But, somehow he managed to escape, leaving a maniacally laughing double in his place.

We then follow a mysterious man, who’s revealed to be the mercenary/assassin Deathstroke, played by Joe Manganiello, as a boat takes him out to a yacht to meet with Luthor. Lex declares to Deathstroke that if the superheroes are going to have their own team then the villains should "have a league of our own."

This could mean that either the Injustice League or the Legion of Doom are coming to the big screen. As the name implies, the Injustice League has long been the super villain answer to the Justice League in the comics. It’s members over the years include a couple villains we’ve already met in the movies, including The Joker, Lex Luthor and Killer Croc - plus a few we know are coming in the future like Black Manta, Deathstroke, and Dwayne Johnsons’ Black Adam. It could also mean the introduction of any number of notable DC baddies like Poison Ivy, Reverse Flash, The Riddler, Bizzaro and many, many others.

As for the Legion of Doom, they were a similar group of villains who were introduced in the Super Friends cartoon series before being brought into the comics. While they have less history in the books, we wouldn’t be surprised if the movies steal the Legion’s cooler sounding name over of the cornier sounding Injustice League.

Time, and the box office performance of Justice League, will tell if either of those groups appear. But, if anything this second end credits scene didn’t let Joe Manganiello’s casting as Deathstroke go to waste.

Multiple reports claim Manganiello’s Deathstroke, who was set to be the villain in The Batman back when Ben Affleck was going to write and direct it, may not be in director Matt Reeves’ incarnation of the project after all.
