5 Mario Crossovers We'd Totally Play

Now that Mario's hung out with the Rabbids, here are some other franchises we'd love to see him partner with.

With the success of Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle, it looks like there’s no genre that the former plumber can't tackle. And if that's true, where else could Mario venture that he hasn't seen before?

Here are five oddball crossovers we’d love to see Mario in next.

While Nintendo and Rare have already had their time in the sun come and go, that doesn't mean the two companies working together in the future is totally impossible. Microsoft has let Rare release games on Nintendo's portable consoles in the past, and...well...the Switch is portable.

Either way, just think about it. Take Viva Pinata's already established garden simulator, but throw in a little bit of that Mushroom Kingdom mojo. Instead of managing a herd of candy-filled creatures, the game could also include piñata versions of characters from throughout Mario's adventurez Wigglers, Boos, Yoshis, Luma -- you name it.

Gardens could be decorated with classic green pipes, and even filled with Piranha Plants that help protect your little pets. And maybe we'd even get to bring back that Delfino Island gizmo and use F.L.U.D.D. to water everything.

OK, before you raise an objection, hear this one out. Mario games have never really been about story, but that doesn't mean that Mario couldn't benefit from a more narrative-driven approach. We've spent decades with Mario and company, and it's way past time for us to finally get to know these characters a little better via the Ace Attorney series.

There's a bunch of fun and goofy ways that this could work. Mario gets fed up with Bowser stealing Peach, finds some ancient Mushroom Kingdom statute that would cause the Koopa King to lose his castle-building permit, and Phoenix Wright has to step in. Or, all the Goombas that’ve been stomped on over the years file a class action suit against Mario. Perhaps Yoshi unionizes for better saddle rates.

Much like Rabbids, it’s another example of a game that Nintendo would probably never use Mario for internally. This approach worked for Ubisoft, so maybe it could work out for Capcom, too.

Nintendo is already working on a theme park, so releasing a game around that very same idea just makes sense. Super Mario Run had its Kingdom Builder mode, but imagine if that mode was fully fleshed out and developed into its own game. Players would be able to create their very own Mushroom Kingdoms, while also meeting the needs of the various Toad inhabitants. Let’s face it -- Toads always seem to need something.

Super Mario Maker already gave players the keys to the proverbial kingdom, but with a focus on letting players design traditional -- or not-so-traditional -- platforming levels. Using similar tools, it would be fun to be able to create Mario's world on a grander scale, while managing all the day-to-day problems of running a theme park or kingdom. Part theme-park simulator, part The Sims, and part Mario. It could totally work.

Mario games are filled with memorable music, and it would be great to see both classic Mario tunes, along with new remixes, available in some type of rhythm game. Perhaps it's time for Nintendo to have Mario join forces with another one of Japan's stars. And that's where the one and only Hatsune Miku comes in.

Mixing the universes together here is easy. Mario gets sucked into a computer, meets Miku and friends, and rhythm-based musical madness ensues. If we're really lucky, it would even include a frantic rendition of Jump Up, Super Star!

While we're dreaming, we might as well dream big. And there probably isn't an IP crossover bigger than one that would bring together Nintendo's Mario and Disney's Mickey Mouse.

This isn't totally out of left field: It's possible that Mario might show up in Wreck-It Ralph 2, and rumors of the two mega-corporations working together have been swirling for years. But a movie cameo in Wreck-It Ralph wouldn't bring together Mario and Mickey, and if the two companies are going to hash something out, it should at least include some type of game.

With Disney Infinity gone, chances for the superstars to ever show up in a game together may have plummeted drastically, but that's no reason to stop hoping. Genre seems to matter little here: Whatever it is, it's time for these two superstars to meet, mano a mano, mouse to plumber.

But, hey, that's just us. Think these crossovers would work? If not, what's your dream Mario crossover? Let us know, and if you liked this video, check out of some of the Weirdest Games Mario has ever appeared in.
