Wrestling Wrap Up: We Don't Need a Shield Reunion

Plus, AJ wins gold at a house show, Austin Aries gone, TNA is now GFW, and the Hardys finally get... shattered?

With Roman Reigns as a perpetually booed attempted-murderer, Seth Rollins as a hard-to-define quasi-over babyface, and Dean Ambrose as the dude who's way to old to still be hanging out in the QT parking lot, is this really a good time to reunite the Hounds of Justice? Even if one of them is still going by a notable canine moniker?

Secondary question: Are we past the point now that a Shield reunion will mean anything at all? Was the iron hot a year ago? Or two years ago? Fresh off the break up?

I remember when there were rumors that the Shield would come back together at a WrestleMania. Or that a 'Mania main event would feature all three former members in a triple threat match. The closest we've come to having a full team up was back when Rollins was still heel - and then again when Rollins beat Roman for the world title (and then Dean immediately cashed in his MITB briefcase) back at Money in the Bank last summer. Which wasn't a team up but, hell, they were all in the ring at more or less the same time.

Since then, Roman's become even more hated and more of a dude who doesn't really care about anything but himself (leaning more true heel than anything), Rollins has failed to catch fire as a true babyface (with most of his storyline being a long drawn out atonement for being an Authority a-hole), and Dean has sort of strayed away from being a lunatic and now resides sort of creepily in this Venn zone between "cool dad" and "gross uncle." For a moment there, Dean was pretty hot as the world champ, but he's been locked into a perpetual mid-card feud with The Miz for almost half a year now. A feud that's seen Miz grow and Dean sort of plateau.

Miz was dead-on last week when he drove home the point that (the character of) Dean doesn't care enough about success. The IC title means everything to Miz. It means nothing to Dean. Well, not nothing, but he can live without it. He just wants to fight. Win or lose. And that's the problem. The "win or lose" part. Miz's gimmick is built on prestige and shiny things while Dean is un-ornamented to the point where having a title belt to carry around almost feels like a nuisance for him.

Anyhow, you can hear me talk about that a little, along with Great Balls of Fire stuff, over on the Intelligent Wrestling Conversation/IWC podcast if you're in the mood for voices in your earholes.

That's where you can catch my thoughts about RAW's big oddly-titled PPV. Also this Best (and Worst) Moments from Great Balls of Fire piece.

And heads up, I probably won't be live-blogging PPVs for a while. At least until Game of Thrones is done. There are no press screeners for it so I'll be watching it live on Sundays and then typing away, putting my thoughts into webby bytes for you to consume. So that's Battleground and SummerSlam and maybe one more. We'll see.

So. This possible Shield team-up. Here's what I'm thinking. With all that's going on with Roman Reigns, it's too much to think that he'll actually come back to the fold. Especially since the enemy team is Miz and his Miztourage. I mean, in a big swerve they could have Joe go over Roman next week (thanks to the Miz) and then Roman will be angry and "all in" and you've got a weird 3-on-3 at SummerSlam. Other than that long shot, it's just Seth and Dean. Maybe bring in Bray Wyatt as an unconventional third if you need an extra guy, but you could honestly just have it be a 2-on-3 bout since Axel and Dallas aren't re-established enough just yet.

There's an upside to this. It keeps Miz's stock up high. I'm all for that. This also means that Curtis Axel (whose new look is "guy overdressed for Whole Foods interview") and Bo Dallas (whose new look is apparently "the dude from Saliva") get to shine a bit. They're talented hombres who deserve a nudge.

One of the downsides here, aside from the fact that the entire Shieldbro "getting the band back together" concept lost its luster a while ago, is that it makes Rollins look like even more of a yutz. Heel or face, he's the one who seems to always want this to happen. The guy who busted it all up is the sad sack who wants to take it all back. Dean is still reluctant to trust Seth, or course, and that makes sense. But all this does is keep Seth's never-ending path to redemption going. He'll never be clean as a babyface. He'll always be locked into some form of an "I'm So So So Sorry" tour.

I guess my point through all this is that some of us, like me, are fickle short-memoried assclamps and the Shield is in our wretched rear-view. Having Seth, Dean, and Roman all on RAW now, it certainly makes sense to address the Shield, but it does nothing to just reunite two of them. It does more, but not much more, to crack open a cold one with all three, but again that's a hard sell given Roman's status as nefarious yard mutt. All I want, truly, is for Miz to stop feuding with Dean. I guess we're getting one more run with it, since Seth and Dean will go over Team Miz and that win will finally allow Ambrose to move along to his next feud or, you know, whatever dude. Don't tell him how to live, maaaaan.
