The nominees for the 2017 Emmy Awards were revealed earlier today, and Game of Thrones was no where to be found. But why?
Since Season 6 of HBO's beloved fantasy drama premiered on its normal spring air date, the entire season was within the qualifications of the 2016 Emmys, and as such is not eligible for consideration this year.
Even though four episodes of Season 6 aired outside of the qualifying timeframe for this year's Emmys, which spanned from June 1, 2016 to May 31, 2017, the Television Academy has a "hanging episodes" rule that allowed for the entire season to be considered, since enough episodes of Season 6 aired within the specified time period.
With the shift to a summer premiere for Season 7, HBO's fantasy drama is not in the running for the 2017 Emmys. That said, Game of Thrones' seventh season will instead be eligible for the 2018 Emmys, as well as the Golden Globes in January 2018.
It's also worth noting that Game of Thrones' eighth and final season might not air until 2019. So, in the event that Season 8 doesn't air next year, it might once again miss the Emmys. Depending on when it premieres in 2019, it might not be eligible for that year's awards, as it could potentially miss the cutoff.
Game of Thrones had a strong year at the 2016 Emmy Awards, winning its second consecutive Emmy for Best Drama Series. Additionally, the episode "Battle of the Bastards" earned Emmys for Outstanding Writing and Directing.
Season 7 of Game of Thrones will premiere this coming Sunday, July 16. In the meantime, check out our brief recap of the events thus far, as well as this overview of where we last saw each of Game of Thrones' major players.
