It turns out that Jason, Zack, Kimberly, Billy, and Trini weren’t the original team of Power Rangers. That revelation will be the subject of a standalone tale in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #20 by Kyle Higgins and artist Daniele Di Nicuolo from publisher BOOM! Studios, which takes us back to 1969 to meet the original squad.
While we don’t have an image of this new team, we are able to exclusively provide he official names and character descriptions for each member. Check them out:
- Igor – 21, male, Soviet KGB agent
- Jamie – 24, female, British singer/songwriter
- Terona – 21, male, war veteran
- Daniel – 18, male, student/protestor
- Grace – 21, female, head secretary at NASA and wannabe astronaut
As you can see, their attributes are very of the time they're from, and they also mirror the current-day team with the same number of male and female members.
If you’re wondering what caused Zordon and Alpha 5 to recruit this team, we only have a few clues to go on.
The first is the cover by artist Jamal Campbell, which shows the Red Ranger's visor reflecting an image of the moon surface with monstrous footprints on the ground. The first moon landing took place in 1969, and we know Rita Repulsa was trapped in a dumpster on the moon, so that seems like a big hint as to why the Rangers might be there.
There’s also the solicitation information (below), that drops the biggest clue of all when it hints that the villain is “psycho.” This is most likely hinting at the villainous Psycho Rangers, enemies to the Space Rangers.

Synopsis: An eye-opening new piece of Power Rangers history is revealed! Well before Jason, Zack, Kimberly, Billy, and Trini became Power Rangers, Zordon was forced to recruit Rangers to battle a foe who’s downright...psycho.
While the ongoing Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic started off as a modern adaption of the original American show, it quickly introduced time travel, parallel, dimensions, and new characters that took it in a wild new direction. Issue #20 is just the latest in a series of unexpected twists from Higgins.
"Any opportunity to add to the Power Ranger mythos is always an incredible honor and one of the fundamental reasons I love writing this book,” Higgins said in a statement. “Case in point, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #20 is going to take us back in time to explore a very different—yet familiar—team of Rangers: the ones that stopped a secret Moon attack during the 1960s. Who were the Power Rangers of 1969? What happened to them? And how do they fit into our current story? We're jumping into the Wayback Machine to the Summer of Love to meet a new cast of Rangers, some of whom will have a huge impact on the future of the Mighty Morphin team!"
Finally, we’ve also got your first look at three variant covers for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #20, which releases on October 18.
