12 Legendary Images of Custom Zelda Arcade Cabinets

Triforce of awesome.

High Scores Arcade has produced two custom 80s-style arcade cabinets based on The Legend of Zelda -- a game which never appeared in arcades back in the 80s. Check out the image gallery below for a look at both the drop-dead gorgeous final result of their efforts, and a behind-the-scenes look at how the dual cabinets were constructed.

With Donkey Kong, Nintendo scored it's first hit in 1981's arcades. If you are lucky enough to play an original Donkey Kong cabinet -- or Popeye, Mario Bros., or Punch-Out!! -- you'll no doubt note the amazing, art-saturated design of the cabinets as being a large part of those game's charms. High Scores Arcade teamed up with artist Sam Bahman, who built a similar custom Zelda cabinet, to produce their Zelda cabinets to closely resemble Nintendo's original artistry in their classic cabinets.

The custom Zelda cabinets can be played in both of High Scores Arcade's San Francisco Bay Area locations in Alameda and Hayward, CA. They are designed for two-player games as the cabinets currently run a variety of NES Nintendo classics, and, of course, The Legend of Zelda. According to High Scores Arcade's Megan Livernoche, the two player controls might soon be needed for a special project, as they work with a programmer on a " 2-player version of Zelda, re-imagined for the arcade, hopefully to be installed into the cabinet at a future date."

Nintendo still has a presence in arcades with Mario Kart GP -- check out IGN Japan's look at the Mario Kart Arcade GP VR experience for a look their latest arcade tech.

Be sure to check out the images in the slideshow above provided by High Scores Arcade for more details on the custom Zelda machines and the build that brought them into existence, and if you are in California or any city: Support your local arcade!
