After various reports, Warner Bros. has confirmed that content support for LEGO Dimensions will end a year earlier than originally intended.
In a statement to IGN, WB confirmed that developer TT Games "will not be producing new expansion packs for the game beyond what is now available." WB and TT will continue to support the game's severs, however, as well as customer support for existing LEGO Dimensions content packs.
Their joint statement reads:
"Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, TT Games and The LEGO Group would like to thank fans for their ongoing support of LEGO Dimensions. After careful consideration, we will not be producing new expansion packs for the game beyond what is now available. We will continue to provide ongoing server and customer support for all LEGO Dimensions packs. Existing packs will continue to work interchangeably and will remain available for purchase."
LEGO Dimensions ends with its Year Two cycle of content, which included '80s characters like Beetlejuice, Gizmo, and ET, as well as more recent hits like Powerpuff Girls and Teen Titans Go! A third year was planned, and reportedly would have featured fan-favorite villain Lord Vortech, a Minecraft expansion, and The Flash, among other characters.
Dimensions first debuted in 2015, mashing together various franchises. IGN's original review said "the collision of worlds is smart, the references are handled with care, and the story is genuinely smart."
LEGO Dimensions follows in step with other toys-to-life games. Earlier this year, Disney shut down the Disney Infinity servers following a cancellation of the series last year.
Additionally, Activision skipped out on producing a new version of its toys-to-life franchise Skylanders this year and has not announced whether a new version of the franchise, with new toys, will be released in the future.
