Netflix's first self-financed original series House of Cards will end with a sixth and final season.
IGN has confirmed that the long-running series starring Kevin Spacey as Frank Underwood and Robin Wright as Claire Underwood will end with a sixth season that reportedly began filming two weeks ago.
TVLine reports that the decision was made to end the show months ago and not in light of the allegations made against Spacey yesterday that he made advances toward actor Anthony Rapp when he was 14 years old. Netflix and series producer Media Rights Capital released a joint statement saying they are "deeply troubled" by these allegations.
"Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey. In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time," the two companies said.
House of Cards first debuted in 2013, with its most recent, fifth season debuting on Netflix in May of this year.
