New Line has found its Shazam! star in Zachary Levi.
IGN can confirm that Levi, who's best known for his leading role in the TV series Chuck, will play Earth's Mightiest Mortal in the upcoming DC Comics film adaptation. This isn't the first time Levi will appear in a comic book film, as the actor played Fandral of the Warriors Three in Marvel Studios' Thor sequels.
Shazam! tells the story of a boy named Billy Batson, who, by simply saying "Shazam!" can transform into an adult superhero. Each letter in the DC hero's name stands for a different god/historical figure—Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury—whose attributes are bestowed upon Bastion when he transforms.
Shazam! is being directed by David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation). Back in August, the director confirmed the film's script is complete, indicating that Shazam! is the next DCEU movie to start filming. The project is expected to begin production in Toronto this coming February.
Last year, Shazam! was divided into two films, with Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam getting his own standalone DC film that's being developed alongside the Shazam! movie. In July, DC chief creative officer Geoff Johns confirmed that while Johnson is still on board to star in Black Adam, he won't appear as the supervillain in Shazam.
