Warning: Spoilers for the Marvel's Agents of SHIELD episode "Rewind" follow...
Well, there you have it. Tonight's episode of Agents of SHIELD, "Rewind," showed us all how Fitz froze himself far into the future in order to catch up with his colleagues. After some crafty concocting, a prison break, a prison re-entry, and a tender "I love you"/"I know" send off, Lance Hunter helped Fitz fight his way back into Jemma's arms.
I briefly chatted with actor Nick Blood about this fun return stint as Lance Hunter, why his character works so well when paired with Fitz, and whether or not he's set to return.
IGN: First thing I was to ask about is that Empire Strikes Back line. Nicely timed with the release of Last Jedi, I must say. Was that in the script or improvised?
Nick Blood: No, that was actually written in, but we did have fun with it. There was a lot going on there that didn't make the final cut because we were messing around quite a bit and having some laughs. There was a take where I kissed the glass as a farewell moment, so you know, we had a lot of fun. I'm sure there's plenty of stuff where we were throwing in extra lines and gestures that got dropped from the final episode. [laughs]
IGN: During the episode, we heard that Hunter and Bobbi were still together in some respect. They'd almost gotten married but ultimately they decided they worked best with a lot of space between them. Was it nice to learn that your characters were still an item?
Blood: To be honest, it's all make believe and I have no real opinion about it one way or another. [laughs] They could have thrown the line in "Oh yeah we've divorced and she's now with someone else." I'm not particularly attached to my character's personal history. But I'm sure it was a nice thing for the audience out there who might be wondering where she is during this time or for those who might be dying to see Bobbi Morse return.

IGN: How is it do you think that Hunter and Fitz fit together? Why do they work so well as a team?
Blood: Well, firstly I think there's this shared background element. You know, they're two Brits and I think they're also open to each others' advice. But obviously, Fitz is more intense and Hunter is a bit more relaxed so there's also kind a buddy cop movie vibe to them. Also, it feels like Hunter sometimes takes on the role of an older brother to Fitz and he's been watching him grow up, over time, from a boy into a man. Beyond that too, Ian and I are actually friends and we enjoy working together so I think there's a lot of that that comes through. We relish the chance to have some fun on set together.
IGN: Is there a path back to the show for Hunter? He's helped Fitz freeze himself, but could he return in a bigger capacity?
Blood: I think the door is always slightly ajar for him, as it were. But the showrunners obviously know best when it comes to their characters and how they fit into whatever story they're telling. So who knows really? If the story makes sense for Hunter to fall back in, you know. This is a world where anything can happen and things can change quickly.
IGN: I have to ask, what's it like always having a name cooler than any of your characters?
Blood: Well, you know when I was a little kid it was really annoying. Because you don’t tend to like anything that’s different or slightly strange about you. But then as I got older it was quite good having a unique name. Because you can’t shake it. Then when someone says “Nick Blood” people know exactly who they’re talking about.
