20th Century Fox's upcoming Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, will no longer be directed by Bryan Singer.
"Bryan Singer is no longer the director of Bohemian Rhapsody," the studio said in a statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter. Earlier this month, Fox stopped production on the film due to the "unexpected unavailability" of the director.
Singer was reportedly absent during production multiple times, causing Tom Hollander—who stars in the film as Queen manager Jim Beach—to allegedly quit for a brief period before being persuaded to return. Rami Malek—who plays Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in the movie—reportedly complained to the studio about Singers unprofessionalism.
Cinematographer Thomas Newton Sigel stepped in to cover as director for some of the days Singer didn't show up. Singer had apparently been warned by Fox before the start of production that the studio wouldn't tolerate any unprofessionalism, and a representative from the Directors Guild of America is said to have been on set to monitor the issue.
After Singer didn't return to the set after Thanksgiving break and Sigel had to step in before production was shut down, Fox decided to fire Singer under his pay-or-play contract. One source told THR Singer is claiming he's suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder because of tension on the set.
With about two more weeks of principal photography needed on Bohemian Rhapsody, Fox is expected to announce a new director within the next few days.
