Awesome Aussie Esports Highlights From Around The World

Our picks for the best A/NZ highlights from the week!

Aussie esports put the work in overseas this week as Dreamhack Winter and the Eleague Cup featured some of our best competitors. Back home Overwatch and StarCraft 2 kept us enthralled as games in both competitions went down to the wire. Let's take a look!

Be sure to head over and check out the rest of the esports hub! Remember you can email tips to me esportsau@ign.com or you can just click to send me an email. If you want, you can tweet suggestions at me as well, my twitter is down the bottom of this article.

Quake Champions - DreamHack Winter Invitational

JAM Gaming's Astroboy played hard at the DreamHack Winter Duel Invitational over the weekend, powering his way through some tough matches to earn a Top 8 finish — although he was inevitably knocked out by Quake 3 legend Cypher. In the game below, Astroboy lost two of his characters early in the fifth and final round of his best of 5 against Spart1e and was forced to defeat all three of his opponent's champions with just one of his own. In the end he played it so cool he wound up being a few steps ahead of the commentators even.

Rocket League - ELEAGUE Cup

The Chiefs travelled to Atlanta to compete in the ELeague cup, where they got a bit of a rough draw in the groups — they were the only team with a name not starting with G. They should have renamed to the Ghiefs. On top of naming issues, the G2 Esports and Gale Force were playing perfect car soccer, and — as evidenced by the fact that the two of them eventually faced off in the Grand Finals — anyone would have had a tough time against them. The Ghiefs managed to beat Ghost Gaming however, putting together a fantastic run against the North American squad and defeating them 3 games to 1. Watch below as the Ghiefs secure a 5th place finish in Overtime.

Overwatch - ANZ ESL Open

The ANZ ESL Open continues to deliver highly competitive local Overwatch as the top teams begin to separate from the pack. Kings GC and Dark Sided collided this week in a knockdown dragout match that went all the way to Game 7 as both sides traded back and forth non-stop. When the decider on Numbani came to pass it was the Kings who were victorious, but nobody can say they had it easy. Watch below as they do everything they can to capture the first point on Lijiang Towerj — only to lose it 30 seconds after the clip ends.

StarCraft 2 - ANZ Proleague

The ANZ Proleague continues this week with more super close action. Legacy and 1FPro duked it out and no winner could be found in regular play — a Ace match was required, seeing LGC's Probe and 1FPro's Meomaika wage war. The problem for Legacy is that Probe had already fallen to Meomaika in game 1 of the series — you might say it was personal, as Probe would get both revenge for his earlier loss and the win for his team. The veteran pro did the work, too — expertly dodging around Meomaika's burrowed banelings to shove into the zerg base and earn victory. If you've got the time, jump back before this clip occurs to see Probe play basically perfect. Maybe next time he should consider using his feet to play.
