Marvel's Inhumans: Box Office Bust or Win?

Marvel's royal family comes to ABC tonight.

Marvel's Inhumans is finally making its debut on ABC tonight, but Marvel teamed up with IMAX to debut the first two episodes in theaters throughout the world.

Released in theaters on September 1, Inhumans had a short, premium-format theatrical run intended to highlight some of the scenes filmed in IMAX. After its full run, Inhumans made, according to Box Office Mojo, approximately $1.52 million domestically and $1.33 million internationally for a worldwide haul of $2.85 million.

Its domestic opening slotted Inhumans into the 24th highest-grossing spot of its debut weekend (Sept. 1-3) — a time frame which ended up being the worst Labor Day weekend at the box office in 17 years. Inhumans only screened in 393 theaters for a $2,889 per theater average. In terms of every movie playing that weekend, that made Inhumans the 14th highest-grossing by per-theater average, and the fourth-highest grossing of all new releases that weekend.

With only a few days in theaters, Inhumans' total naturally pales in comparison to the openings or total box office results of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As it stands, Inhumans is currently the 148th highest-grossing movie of the year domestically.

But of course, Inhumans was not set up to be a box office smash competing at the level of those films — the theatrical release represents a unique partnership for IMAX testing the waters with companies like Marvel and ABC, as well as possibly an attempt to drive ticket sales during a holiday weekend.

There are also very few similar comparisons to be made considering the special circumstances of the release. The most notable might be Game of Thrones' IMAX showing in 2015. The show's special screening in early 2015 made just under $1.9 million domestically in its limited run.

IGN reviewed the Inhumans premiere ahead of its IMAX debut, saying "Inhumans isn’t bad because it’s not a loyal adaptation of the comics. Inhumans is bad because it’s a slog to get through."
