When Will Miracleman Return at Marvel?

The Silver Age is still coming... eventually.

For decades, fans have waited to see Neil Gaiman and artist Mark Buckingham finish the lost Miracleman storyline, “The Silver Age.” On the third day of Comic-Con, we finally got an update at Marvel's Cup O’ Joe panel.

When asked about the status of Miracleman, Marvel senior editor Nick Lowe said that Buckingham is redrawing the entire Silver Age story, and he described the pages as “Marvel meets Miyazaki.” Lowe added that he is still actively in touch with Buckingham and Gaiman, but right now Marvel is not ready to announce a release date. Several issues of The Silver Age were solicited for release last year but were later canceled.

Miracleman was originally called Marvelman when he was created by Mick Anglo in 1954. However, the character was rechristened Miracleman in 1982 when Alan Moore wrote a dark reboot of the character. When Moore left the title, Gaiman and Buckingham took over with issue #17 and completed their first storyline, “The Golden Age.” Two issues of their next arc, “The Silver Age,” were released before publisher Eclipse went out of business. One of the reasons that the series remained out of print so long is that it was an open question as to who owned the rights to publish the original stories and any potential continuations.

Since Miracleman came to Marvel in 2009, many of the original stories by Anglo and Moore have been reprinted, but with Moore credited as “The Original Writer” per his request.
