Marvel wrapped up their time at SDCC with the "Women of Marvel" panel this afternoon. While there weren't any new books to be announced at the panel, the panelists (including Hulk writer Mariko Tamaki, The Mighty Captain Marvel writer Margaret Stohl, Generation X writer Christina Strain. Runaways writer Rainbow Rowell and Marvel's content development director Sana Amanat and producer Judy Stephens) made it clear that the upcoming Marvel Legacy relaunch will serve as a strong platform for further elevating these characters.
The panel started off with a tribute to the recently passed Flo Steinberg, an influential force at Marvel during its 1960's transformation. Amanat said that all future Women of Marvel panels will be dedicated to Steinberg.
In happier news, Amanat set the tone for the panel by showing a montage of female-focused cover images, pointing out that Marvel has gone from having zero female-focused series less than a decade ago to having 19 now, with "a few more" in development.
Tamaki revealed that her Hulk series will change in more than just name as it shifts from "Hulk" to "She-Hulk" and reverts to its classic numbering for Marvel Legacy. Tamaki's first legacy storyline will pit Jen Walters against iconic Hulk villain The Leader. Intriguingly, Tamaki said that this storyline is inspired by the works of Stephen King.
Rowell discussed how her upcoming Runaways comic compares to the original Brian K. Vaughan/Adrian Alphona run. Specifically, while the original Runaways was about the characters breaking away from their families and the superhero community, the new series will focus on their decision to become heroes and be a family.
Stohl discussed how Marvel Legacy offers a chance to further elevate Captain Marvel in the Marvel Universe, especially with Captain America's reputation taking a beating thanks to Secret Empire. She described Carol Danvers as "the standard bearer" for Marvel's heroines.
Finally, Amanat teased some upcoming developments for teen heroines Ms. Marvel and Ironheart. Kamala Khan will soon have to contend with the emergence of a rival Jersey City hero named Red Dagger, while Riri Williams will get a chance to reunite with the flesh-and-blood Tony Stark in the Generations maxi-series and benefit from some of his wisdom.
