Why Skurge Betrays Thor for Hela in Thor: Ragnarok

Karl Urban also weighs in on the film's mix of magic and artillery.

The new trailer for Thor: Ragnarok that Marvel Studios debuted this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con offered a glimpse at Karl Urban's Skurge, who's seen allied with Cate Blanchett's Hela. IGN spoke with Urban about his role and why Skurge betrays Chris Hemsworth's Thor to side with the Asgardian goddess of death.

"When we find Skurge he's operating the Bifrost because Heimdall is missing in action, and then pretty soon after that Hela shows up," Urban told IGN. "Skurge sees the writing on the wall and has to make a decision whether to die or join her, so his instincts of self-preservation take over."

While Urban remained tight-lipped on whether or not Skurge is actually a secret ally of Thor's, he did tease that his ultimate allegiance "is the dilemma" for his character in the movie. The actor also spoke to the mix of magic and artillery in Thor: Ragnarok, calling the film "quite zany and eclectic and fun."

For even more about his role as Skurge, including his experience wielding the character's iconic Bloodaxe, watch our full interview with Urban below:
