Update: One of the planned releases for October 27 has been delayed, as God Particle, the third installment in the Cloverfield universe, was delayed.
Still, October 27 remains an incredibly busy day of releases for games, TV, and moves. Read on for everything still set to debut that day.
With that announcement that Stranger Things’ second season has been moved up to October 27, the final Friday of that month has now become one of the most packed days in entertainment in recent memory.
But is that day going to remain so packed, or will one of the various movies, TV shows, and games set to launch that day budge in the battle for viewers and players’ hours? Below, we take a look at just how likely any of the day’s major releases are to move and make all of our choices just a bit easier.
Originally scheduled for a Halloween release, Netflix has moved up Stranger Things’ return to the Friday prior. Not only does this give those binging the show’s second season an entire weekend to watch all nine episodes, but it also puts the show more in line with Netflix’s traditional Friday release schedule.
How likely to move? Not likely at all. Netflix has shown little pattern of delaying shows after providing release dates in the past. Especially with such an anticipated return as that of last year’s breakout streaming hit, Netflix would likely not announce a firm debut date without confidence in the show’s production schedule. Plus Netflix wants to make sure you have ample time to plan your new Halloween costumes.
Though a string of leaks indicated Origins existence months before its release, Ubisoft officially announced the latest Assassin’s Creed entry at E3 2017. The last mainline Assassin’s Creed released in 2015, with Ubisoft using the time since to re-examine the franchise. Featuring a new time period, lead assassin and more, Ubisoft debuted the game with a full E3 reveal, including an opportunity to play Origins on an Xbox One X.
How likely to move? Unlikely. Origins has clearly been in development long before its announcement, and Ubisoft executives have discussed long before the reveal that the company wasn’t necessarily set on releasing the newest entry in 2017. Considering the firm release date and lack of delays in the franchise’s history — Assassins Creed Unity had a short, two week delay back in 2014 — barring any unexpected difficulties, Ubisoft’s staked claim on the date looks as firm as the chance that people will be assassinated in a game called Assassin’s Creed.
Announced at the start of this year, Super Mario Odyssey has been positioned as Nintendo’s marquee title for the holiday season on Nintendo Switch. Following the system and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s strong launch, Nintendo used its E3 spotlight to fully reveal what players can expect from Mario’s next major jump. But the Mario focus didn’t end with the spotlight — in addition to hands-on time at E3, Nintendo showed a lengthy gameplay demo during its Treehouse Live E3 stream.
How likely to move? Not likely, but Nintendo has never been afraid to delay a game. Nintendo pushed Breath of the Wild to ensure the game was ready, and has even announced a delay into 2018 for the Switch’s paid online service. Even so, Nintendo has established a smart cadence of a major monthly, exclusive release on Switch, and Odyssey perfectly fits into that slot for October. Sure, November currently has no major announced release dates for the Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo isn’t directly competing with the day’s other major releases on its own system. Any delay would likely be made for the sake of Odyssey’s quality, not because October 27 is more crowded than a Toad family reunion. (I assume, I haven’t been invited to one yet myself.)
Following in the footsteps of Bethesda’s Fallout 4 E3 release date announcement-to-fall launch, the sequel to 2014’s Wolfenstein: The New Order debuted at this year’s E3 and is set to come out only a few short months later. The reveal of The New Colossus came with an 8-minute long trailer following teases for the sequel and its title dating back to last E3.
How likely is it to move? The New Colossus is one of two upcoming Bethesda releases revealed at E3 and set to be debuted in October, The Evil Within 2 being the other. Bethesda hasn’t made much of a habit of delaying games in recent years, and in fact many have looked to the Fallout 4 announcement/release as a poster child for how well that method could work. It largely depends on if Bethesda wants to give the game a bit of breathing room outside of the Assassin’s Creed/Call of Duty WWII launch area.
After a seven-year hiatus, the Saw franchise returns, hoping to revitalize what life may be left in a series praised during its early years until its critical and commercial returns fizzled out. Little is known about how the latest entry will fall in line with the deadly puzzles of the franchise’s past, but it’s a safe bet the new naming convention (rather than going with Saw 7, for example), hints at some separation from the previous entries.
How likely to move? This puzzle is easy to solve — not at all. The Saw franchise has, without fail, always released the week prior to Halloween. The series had a monopoly on releasing throughout the early 2000’s, so don’t expect Jigsaw to buck that trend. If anything, in success it will likely reassert Jigsaw’s deadly chokehold on the season.
What is expected to be the third film branded in the Cloverfield series, God Particle, from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions. Other than a general plot description and a reported cast, little is known about the film, save for the release date plotted out for it last year. (The film originally had a planned release for February of this year.)
How likely to move? it has been! God Particle has officially been delayed until February 2, 2018, the second move for the film following its delay out of February earlier this year. But for more, check out our original consideration of why a release date shift isn't all that shocking:
Well, considering the film moved already, and nothing has yet been seen of it, there’s certainly a possibility for God Particle to move. Both previous Cloverfield universe films opened in the first quarter of the year as well, so a delay into 2018 is possible.
There is also of course the series’ penchant for making release dates such a memorable part of their release. Cloverfield originally debuted in a teaser trailer without a title and only its release date, which become synonymous with that film’s marketing. And then 10 Cloverfield Lane only officially got branded as a Cloverfield film with a first trailer two months before its release. It would be surprising if God Particle, if indeed it is the third Cloverfield film, to integrate a new, unexpected release into the marketing. Who knows, the movie may already be out and we just haven’t found it yet.
Of course, none of these assumptions are scientific, and anything could affect the production of these games, movies, and shows that causes a scheduling change.
