Walmart Cancels SNES Classic Edition Preorders

Nintendo has "nothing to announce" about preorders.

After listing the Super NES Classic Edition as available for preorder over the weekend, Walmart has been emailing customers to inform them their preorders have been cancelled.

In an email sent out to those who preordered, including a number of IGN employees, a representative for Walmart explained that "due to a technical glitch," the SNES Classic was made available on Friday, July 21 and the orders must now be cancelled.

The full email to customers reads:

Thank you for your interest in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System – Classic Edition. As you are aware, this is a highly sought after console that will launch later this fall.

Unfortunately, due to a technical glitch, the Super Nintendo Classic Edition was mistakenly made available last Friday evening ahead of the official release date. We, regrettably, will have to cancel this item on your order. We know that this is incredibly disappointing to you, and we’re truly sorry for this mistake.

In regards to the cancellation of this item, if you paid by credit card, your card has not been charged. Any authorization holds placed on your account will automatically expire in accordance with the card issuer's policy. If you paid through PayPal or with a gift card, your payment will be refunded when the order is cancelled.

The official launch date for this item is 9/29, please check the product page on Walmart.com prior to that date for any updates.

I do hope you’ll give us another chance to earn back your business.

IGN has reached out to Walmart for further comment about Super NES Classic Edition preorders. When reached for comment regarding preorders, a representative for Nintendo of America said "We have nothing to announce on this topic."

Nintendo announced the SNES Classic in June, revealing the 21 included games such as Super Mario World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Following its announcement, Nintendo confirmed to IGN that the SNES Classic controllers would have a longer cord length than that of the NES Classic's controllers.

The company also intends to produce "significantly more" SNES Classic than NES Classics, which Nintendo had shipped 2.3 million units of worldwide before its cancellation this year.
