By writer Kelly Thompson & artist Marco Checchetto | Marvel
Captain Phasma turned out to be a disappointment to many Star Wars fans when she debuted in The Force Awakens. She's a character whose cool appearance wasn't backed up by memorable characterization. Hopefully, that will change when she returns in The Last Jedi. And between Delilah S. Dawson's novel Phasma and this new mini-series, Disney is ensuring that fans will have much more background on this enigmatic soldier leading into the new movie.
This mini-series picks up immediately after we last saw Phasma in The Force Awakens, beginning with her escape from the garbage chute and the doomed Starkiller Base. Where does she go from there? How does she work to salvage her fearsome reputation? And how will she go about seeking vengeance for her humiliating defeat? Those are questions that Star Wars veterans Kelly Thompson and Marco Checchetto will answer here.
By writer Marguerite Bennett & artist Marguerite Sauvage | DC
DC Comics Bombshells definitely ranks among DC's most successful digital-first series, running for 100 digital chapters and 33 print issues. And it seems that writer Marguerite Bennett is just getting started. Bombshells United is a relaunch of the previous series, one that shifts the setting to 1943 and offers readers a fresh jumping-on point. This issue will add Cassie Sandsmark and Donna Troy to the mix as Wonder Woman is called to Arizona to protect the two girls and their families.
Now is a great time to hop on board this franchise if you haven't already. With Bennett and artist Marguerite Sauvage still steering the ship, there's no reason to expect anything less than greatness.
By writer Paul Tobin & artist Arjuna Susini | Oni
This new mystery/crime drama from Oni Press features a pretty nifty premise. Picture RoboCop with an supernatural twist. When Detroit police officer Jutte Shelley is gunned down in the line of duty, her connection to the Frankenstein family allows her to rise once more. And once she does, Jutte sets about tracking down the other members of her family and coming to terms with her legacy.
Writer Paul Tobin has sown a unique ability to juggle different genres and move between all-ages and adult-oriented comics. We're eager to see him return to the latter with Made Men.
By writer Cavan Scott & artist Derek Charm | IDW
Apparently the Star Wars universe is too big for just one comic publisher. IDW is launching its own new series this week, one that aims to take a more cartoonish and all-ages approach to the franchise. Each issue of Star Wars adventures will include two stories featuring a variety of characters from the Original Trilogy, the Prequels and the new films. It looks to be a fitting companion piece to the new Forces of Destiny cartoon and toy line. And for now, this is the only way fans will be able to read the further adventures of Rey in comic book form.
