This year marks the 25th anniversary of Harley Quinn’s creation by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm in Batman: The Animated Series, and to celebrate she’s pulling a classic Harley Quinn move: stealing Batman Day, September 23 and making it all about her. As part of Harley’s takeover, DC Comics commissioned two iconic Batman covers but with Harley stealing the spotlight, both by veteran comic book cover artist Ryan Sook.
The first Harley cover-bomb recreates Jim Lee’s cover to Batman #608, the first chapter in the acclaimed Hush story with writer Jeph Loeb and inker Scott Williams. Lee’s cover is actually a 2nd printing variant but was so popular that it became an instant classic.
The other sees Harley leaping alongside Batman, a lightning strike in the background, in a recreation of the first issue cover to Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, and Lynn Varley’s seminal work, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
These covers are being grouped together in a larger poster that will be on display at retailer stores taking part in Batman Day, er, Harley Quinn Day celebrations. The TDKR cover will also be used as the cover to the free comic given out at these in-store events -- featuring a reprint of Batman #16, the first chapter of "I Am Bane," written by Tom King with art by David Finch.
