Darth Vader Is Haunted By His Past

There is still good in him.

The Dark Lord of the Sith had a very eventful time in Darth Vader #5 today.

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Star Wars: Darth Vader #5!

This issue wrapped up the series' first storyline, which has been exploring exactly how Vader acquired his iconic red lightsaber shortly after the events of Revenge of the Sith. Readers have already learned one interesting new tidbit about the Sith. Sith Lords don't merely build their sabers; they have to steal them from Jedi and corrupt the Kyber crystal within through the power of the Dark Side. Now that Vader has acquired his crystal (courtesy of slain Jedi Master Kirak Infil'a), he finally set about building his saber in this issue.

Things didn't go quite as planned. Emperor Palpatine sent his new apprentice to the volcanic world of Mustafar, ordering Vader to build his saber near the very spot where Anakin Skywalker died. But as he attempted to corrupt the crystal, Vader found himself having second thoughts about his new lot in life. He instead chose to take up Kirka Infil'a's blade and turn against his master.

Vader managed to do what he couldn't in Revenge of the Sith, killing Palpatine and ridding the galaxy of his evil. Vader then tracked down his old friend, Obi-Wan, and begged for forgiveness.

That's what happened in Vader's Force-induced vision, anyway. Coming to his senses, Vader cast aside these hallucinations of a better life where he finds redemption, reminding himself "This is all there is." Vader completed his lightsaber and finally returned to Palpatine, ready to take his place as right-hand-man to the galaxy's greatest tyrant.
