The 100: Will the Rocket Work?

Plus, is Octavia ready to lead?

The 100 is ending Season 4 in the midst of a typically intense scenario this week – one with arguably the biggest stakes yet, given “Praimfaya” (also the name of the finale) is about to hit, via a death wave that will wipe out all life on the planet.

I spoke to The 100’s executive producer and showrunner, Jason Rothenberg, about what to expect in the finale, as Clarke, Raven, Bellamy, Monty, Harper, Murphy, Emori and Echo race to get the rocket ready in time to make it to the Ark and save themselves, while Octavia has to adjust to her new position as leader for the 1200 locked inside a bunker that can sustain them for the next five years.

IGN: Last week’s episode firmly established who was going to be in the bunker, while introducing how the others could survive if they can make it back to the Ark. But as far as the rocket scenario, is it safe to say that, this being The 100, things won’t be going off without a hitch for our heroes?

Rothenberg: Yeah, it’s going to be hard for sure. For me, one of the cool parts about this episode is it’s a really impossible science challenge. It’s “schmience” as we say. It’s like that scene in Apollo 13 when they say “We gotta make something that does this out of these 12 items that weren’t meant to do that.” Here it’s a very similar thing where Raven goes over a checklist of all the stuff that has to happen in order for them to pull this off. And the episode is, in real time almost, about them trying to pull it off.

IGN: Tell me about bringing in even the possibility of characters returning to space. The space setting was a big part of the show when it began but obviously has not been for quite a while. How did you decide maybe it was time to return there?

Rothenberg: When you establish a death wave that is going to render the ground uninhabitable, there are two ways to escape it. You can get below it or you can get above it. It was always the plan to find a bunker and also force certain people to have to go back to space. That’s why we introduced the rocket. It was always there for that reason. I’ve been reading some reviews, including yours, and saw it was being called “Chekhov's rocket.” I don’t know if you coined that term…

IGN: I didn’t coin that term but I agree with the sentiment!

Rothenberg: It is Chekhov's rocket. It was always there for that. I love sci-fi and I love the space component of the show in Season 1. On some levels, the story went away from it, obviously, but the chance to get back there was exciting creatively.

IGN: Meanwhile, Octavia’s in such a different place now, going from an outcast to the one everyone is looking to for leadership. How is she feeling about this new role?

Rothenberg: In terms of Octavia, when the finale starts, she’s been thrust into this leadership position. She earned it, no question. She won the conclave and people are looking to her to lead them because that’s the Grounder way. They respect strength and respect the rules of that institution. So she has this window of opportunity to lead. But of course, she now needs to do that and she’s a little apprehensive still. She needs help, and Indra, fortunately, is there. And I won’t ruin what we see, but Octavia will be forced to choose whether to assume the role.
