Mantis Co-Creator Not a Fan of Guardians 2's Take on the Character

"I liked her, but that’s not Mantis."

Mantis co-creator Steve Englehart isn't a fan of the way the character is depicted in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

In an interview with Polygon, Englehart revealed that the character in the Marvel sequel "has nothing to do with Mantis." Even though Englehart enjoyed the film and thought "the Mantis on the screen was entertaining," he still couldn't ignore the film's wildly different interpretation of her.

"I really don’t know why you would take a character who is as distinctive as Mantis is and do a completely different character and still call her Mantis," said Englehart. "I liked her, but that’s not Mantis."

Englehart co-created Mantis with artist Don Heck in 1973's Avengers No. 112, where Mantis is depicted as "the Celestial Madonna" who would give birth to one of the universe's most important beings. Unlike Pom Klementieff's version of the character, Mantis trains as a martial artist and even shows a bit of anger in the comics.
