TimeSplitters Fan Project Stalls Due to CryEngine Problems

The developers are contemplating making a new game instead.

Development on the fan project TimeSplitters Rewind, the Crytek-approved multiplayer compilation of the first three TimeSplitters games, has stalled.

The developers behind the community-led project announced in a blog post that, due to issues with CryEngine, they're currently unable to work on the project with any momentum. "What takes us a few minutes in another engine took us up to four days in CryEngine," reads the post.

The team has been waiting for Crytek to release necessary CryEngine updates, which would change "the core systems of the engine," for over four months now.

During that wait time, the developers have been working on a new build in Unreal Engine 4 and it's playable. However, if the team releases this version instead, they'll have to re-brand as they'll no longer be able to use the TimeSplitters IP. "If this is to happen, we would likely do our own interpretation of what we think TimeSplitters 4 could have been," the team explained.

As such, the development team has to make the difficult choice between sticking with CryEngine, which they "have very little faith in," and keep the TimeSplitters IP, or to go ahead and make what would be a completely new game in Unreal Engine 4.

Before making any decisions, the developers want the fans to chime in on their Discord server and vote in a poll at the end of week.

TimeSplitters Rewind was originally announced in 2013 for PC and a few months later for PlayStation 4.
