Next DC Animated Film Will Seemingly Be Gotham By Gaslight

Old-school.

Following Batman and Harley Quinn, the next DC animated film appears to be a retelling of Gotham by Gaslight, the story that sees Batman transplanted into the 18th Century.

An image on Reddit appears to show the back cover of the Batman and Harley Quinn Blu-ray, which lists "A Sneak Peak at DC Universe's Next Animated Movie: Batman: Gotham by Gaslight" as a special feature:

Gotham by Gaslight was originally a much-loved DC Elseworlds story, featuring Bruce Wayne (alongside several familiar faces) becoming Batman in 1889, and investigating whether Jack the Ripper has come to Gotham.

The one-shot comic - written by Brian Augustyn and drawn by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola - was released in 1989. We called it a classic and a "long-forgotten gem of the late '80s" in a retrospective review. A sequel, Master of the Future, followed in 1991.

So far, there's no details on how direct an adaptation the animated movie will be, nor who will appear in it.

Interestingly, there's an Elseworld somewhere that features a Gotham by Gaslight video game adaptation - in our reality, however, it was canceled after a prototype was rejected. All that's left is some very cape-swishy footage.

Batman and Harley Quinn will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on August 15, but will get a public premiere at San Diego Comic-Con on July 21.
