Changes are coming to Marvel's ongoing Star Wars comic, as writer Jason Aaron will be stepping down from the series after October's Star Wars #37. Replacing him will be another writer plenty familiar to Star Wars readers - Kieron Gillen.
Current artist Salvador Larroca will remain on board on the series. Larroca also drew all 25 issues of Star Wars: Darth Vader Vol. 1 with Gillen.
“My aim’s simple – to do what Salva and I did with Darth Vader, but for Leia, Luke and Han. As in, chart the rise and fall of the Rebellion between A New Hope and the Empire Strikes Back, how it changes them all and how it changes the universe,” Gillen told StarWars.com. “So a simple aim, but as nightmarishly tricky to pull off as dropping a proton torpedo down a thermal exhaust port. But hopefully as thrilling if we pull it off. I can’t wait till you see it up. First up: the post-apocalyptic hell that remains of Jedha after the Death Star punched a hole through its mantle.”
Gillen's comments make it clear that the series will begin making use of the new worlds and story elements introduced in last year's prequel movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, beginning with a trip to the ruined world of Jedha.
No reason was given for Aaron's departure from the series. But with Aaron writing this fall's Marvel Legacy #1 one-shot and introducing the Avengers of 1,000,000 BC, it may be that he needs more room to focus on whatever new Marvel projects he has in the pipeline. Perhaps he's preparing to take over the Avengers franchise in 2018? There's also no word yet on whether this new assignment will affect Gillen's work on his current Star Wars project, Doctor Aphra.
This isn't the only big news in the world of Star Wars comics recently. Last week at SDCC, we learned that Marvel will be publishing an adaptation of Timothy Zahn's novel Thrawn.
