Terminator director and producer James Cameron recently shed light on what lies ahead for the franchise, suggesting a new film trilogy that reinvents the series may be on the horizon.
Speaking to News.com.au, Cameron said the question he's currently faced with is: "has the franchise run its course or can it be freshened up?" He noted how current technology is quickly approaching what was seen as sci-fi in the early days of the franchise, calling into question the series' relevance in our world today.
As such, Cameron is currently discussing the possibility of updating the franchise with a trio of films. "I am in discussions with David Ellison, who is the current rights holder globally for the Terminator franchise and the rights in the U.S. market revert to me under U.S. copyright law in a year and a half so he and I are talking about what we can do. Right now we are leaning toward doing a three-film arc and reinventing it."
Earlier this year, Arnold Schwarzenegger shared a few details about the next Terminator film, confirming the project "is moving forward" and that he "will be in the movie." While Schwarzenegger didn't provide story details, he said Cameron "has some good ideas of how to continue with the franchise."
A sequel to Terminator Genisys was originally scheduled to debut this past May, but Paramount removed the project from its release schedule in January of last year. According to reports back in March, the studio is reportedly planning to announce a Terminator reboot sometime this year.
