The Winds of Winter, the upcoming sixth installment in George R.R. Martin's fantasy series A Song of Ice Fire, is still "months away," the author has revealed.
In a post on his LiveJournal, Martin shot down rumors claiming that he has already finished the book and is withholding it, or that he hasn't written a single page yet, calling both reports "equally false and equally moronic."
With regard to his progress on The Winds of Winter, he said, "I am still working on it, I am still months away (how many? good question), I still have good days and bad days, and that's all I care to say."
The author also discussed Fire and Blood, which covers the fake histories of the Targaryen rulers, saying it will be released in two volumes because it contains so much content. The first volume, which will encompass "Aegon's Conquest up to and through the regency of the boy king Aegon III," is mostly written and will "likely" release sometime in "late 2018 or early 2019." According to Martin, the second volume "will be a few more years in coming."
With regard to whether fans can expect The Winds of Winter or Fire and Blood's first volume to arrive first, Martin said, "[it's] hard to say at this juncture, but I do think you will have a Westeros book from me in 2018... and who knows, maybe two. A boy can dream..."
Regardless, Martin's beloved fantasy story continues on HBO with Season 7 of Game of Thrones. Read IGN's "Dragonstone" review for our thoughts on the premiere.
Meanwhile, "The Book of Swords," an upcoming anthology that features stories from a variety of different authors, including a Game of Thrones short story by George R. R. Martin, will be released on October 10.
