COD: Nazi Zombies Will Be the 'Most Terrifying' Yet

"We think you’re going to maybe pee a little."

During the Call of Duty: WW2 Nazi Zombies Reveal panel today at San Diego Comic-Con, Sledgehammer officially revealed the next iteration of their zombies mode calling it "probably the least campy and most terrifying" yet.

The panel opened with a finished version of the previously leaked trailer, showcasing an intensely gory, horror-themed take on the zombies formula.

"The number of times we think you’re going to maybe pee a little is going to be more than what you’ve experience before," Sledgehammer co-founder Michael Condrey said, who was joined by creative director Cameron Dayton and senior director of development Jon Horsley.

The team stressed their goal is to keep it grounded and avoid that natural desire to "dial everything up to 11," while Condrey drew parallels between lessons he learned from a previous game he developed, Dead Space.

"[Dead Space] was a chance to immerse you in a place that you believed in and then terrified you," Condrey said. "What we learned in Dead Space was it's about the tension. For us it was the tension, the build up, that was more terrifying."

To give you an idea of just how much of a horror game Sledgehammer considers Nazi Zombies, Condrey referenced John Carpenter's work as inspiration and took a moment to start a round of applause for the late George A. Romero.

But the change to a more grounded, horror tone isn't the only departure from the previous versions of the mode.

“We’ve made two big structural changes," said Jon Horsley. "We onboard players in a more education[al] way so you understand the game better. We have a more layered map than most. And we’re probably the least campy and most terrifying.”

"Easter eggs and difficulty," said Jon Horsley speaking to the two biggest gameplay differences coming to Nazi Zombies. "There’s a hidden world and for those who can see it there are secrets to find. There are rewards for those who can find the secrets, and unlock parts of the map, as well."

"It’s going to be the hardest easter egg hunt you’ve ever experienced,” Condrey said.

"If you just want to go in and shoot rotten things, you'll have fun," said Cameron Dayton. "There’s also all sorts of depth."

The team went on to confirm that there will be perks and a new special reward system that won't completely rewrite the playbook, but will strike a balance between introducing new elements and retaining what players love.

"We have a mystery box and wonder weapons and those kind of traditional offerings," Dayton went on to confirm. "We've kind of cranked the wonder weapons up to 11. If you get one of these, we want you to feel godlike."

Though the cast of characters starring in Nazi Zombies was revealed earlier this week, the developers also stated that the characters will be part of the Monuments Men, sent to find and recover art from the nazi reich, who find more than they bargain for when they come across Nazi experimentations with the occult.

Call of Duty: WW2 and the included Nazi Zombies mode will be released November 3 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. And be sure to check out all our Call of Duty: WW2 E3 2017 single- and multiplayer coverage.
