Blade Runner: Timeline Between Films Chronicled

Plus, a scene breakdown.

Warner Bros. kicked off their Blade Runner: 2049 presentation today at San Diego Comic-Con with a multi-screen timeline charting the major historical events in the thirty years between when the original 1982 film (which was set in 2019) is set and the forthcoming sequel.

The video timeline was narrated by Edward James Olmos, who co-starred as "Gaff" in the original film. The timeline begins with what happened to Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard at the end of the original movie:

  • 2019 Deckard escapes
  • 2020: A new Replicant model
  • 2022: A blackout on the west coast of the US
  • 2023: Replicant Prohibition begins. Those who can go into hiding.
  • 2025: The rise of Wallace Corp, helps solve food shortage
  • 2030: Prohibition repealed with help from Wallace
  • 2049: Society divided between two classes, Replicant and humans

The presentation then segued to a clip from Blade Runner: 2049 featuring a now older Deckard saying to someone offscreen, “Sometimes to love someone, you gotta be a stranger."

The studio also showed one full scene between Ryan Gosling's protagonist, the cop named K, and Ana de Armas' Replicant, Joi. She leads him past rows of glass booths containing nude human-life forms, basically the husks of Replicants. One of the forms in the glass resembles Dave Bautista's character.

Joi then leads K into a gray, metallic room where she uses a device to bring up a presentation on a screen. A shot of an eyeball appears on the screen as they listen to audio. It's dialogue from a scene in the original movie, when Deckard used the Voight-Kampff machine to interrogate Sean Young's Replicant Rachael.

Joi comments on how “we were difficult to spot then.” K observes that, from the tape, it's clear Rachael liked Deckard. “She’s trying to provoke him.” Joi said it’s “invigorating” to be asked questions

Joi asks K whether he likes his job. He simply replies by asking her to thank Mr. Wallace for him before he exits the room. End scene.

Blade Runner: 2049 flies into theaters this October.
