Dragon Ball Super Episode 93 Review

Overflowing energy.

Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.

The Tournament of Power is almost upon us and Goku scrambles to find a tenth member. There are some great moments in Episode 93, as Frieza is added back into the mix and another Super Saiyan discovers her powers. Things did take several minutes to get going as the first segment dragged on longer than was needed, but the episode picked up rather quickly afterwards.

Even though the idea seemed universally hated, Goku reached out to Frieza to join the Tournament of Power. I’m very excited to see how Frieza will mess things up for them, and if he will even make it to the Tournament or if Buu will wake up before then. What I find most interesting, though, is how Goku planned to deal with Frieza. Using Baba’s powers to resurrect Frieza is an ingenious move as it only lasts for 24 hours. This is a good throwback to how Goku was resurrected during the Buu arc of Dragon Ball Z, and it made me quite happy to see it worked back in in a manner wholly different than its original use.

Although it’s a subtle thing, I was very pleased with the artwork this week, particularly during the scenes with Frieza. When Goku first arrives, the field is gentle and happy, but upon releasing Frieza from his cage the field and sky immediately darken as petals begin floating through the air. It added a good sense of tension and darkness to the discussion between the two, and made it all the more impactful.

It’s surprising that, in an episode where Frieza returns, he’s overshadowed by someone else. Kale, the quiet Saiyan from Universe 6, steals the show this week as she transforms into a crazed Super Saiyan. Every moment of this segment was enjoyable, from her chaotic transformation to her sudden shift in personality. Caulifla’s reaction to everything made things even better. While Cabba was fearful, she embraced Kale’s newfound power and was nearly giddy with excitement. It’s clear that all of this is meant to be reminiscent of Brolly, the Legendary Super Saiyan who was in several movies, but I was happy to see Dragon Ball Super already establishing differences between the two. For instance, at the last second it seemed Kale realized what she was doing and stopped herself, something Brolly would never do.

While things did pick up quickly, the opening minutes of Episode 93 felt like they had little reason to exist. A lot of time was spent on discussing the Frieza topic and then even more time used as Goku speaks to King Yemma about him. All of this time ended up adding nothing to the episode, as everyone ultimately agreed and Frieza was released. I would've much preferred spending more time with Frieza himself instead of wasting time on unnecessary build-up.

The Verdict

Episode 93 started out slow this week as it spent several minutes on unnecessary build up to the moment Frieza returns. Once that segment ends, however, things get a lot better. Kale’s new transformation was great to witness and promises to introduce some chaos during the Tournament of Power, while the re-introduction of Frieza into the series was handled with great care and some truly stunning artwork.
