Magic: The Gathering RPG Announced

The official title will be revealed "at a later date."

A AAA Magic: The Gathering RPG is currently in development, Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios announced today.

The game is being "built from the ground up" for console and PC, with Crypitc Studios (Neverwinter) handling development, according to the announcement. The companies didn't share further details about the game, only saying "additional details and the game’s official title will be revealed at a later date."

"We are ecstatic about the direction of the game Cryptic has been shaping," sPerfect World Entertainment CEO Bryan Huang said. "It’s always been a dream of ours to bring Magic’s Planeswalkers to a modern RPG."

Stephen D'Angelo, Cryptic Studios' CEO, added: "Everything from the graphics to the gameplay is being targeted for a truly unique AAA game. We’re thrilled to provide Magic fans with an opportunity to explore the game’s worlds and characters through an entirely new lens."

While a AAA RPG is new ground for the franchise, several games based on the mega-popular card game have been released over the years. The latest, Magic Duels, is currently available on Xbox One, PC, and iOS. It recently added 158 new cards as part of the Amonkhet expansion. Magic: The Gathering — Duels of the Planeswalkers was another Magic series that saw several iterations released from 2009 through 2015.
