This time a year ago, Microsoft’s message was clear: The Xbox One was no longer a ‘living room entertainment device’; it was a video game console. Since then, the publisher dropped the Xbox One’s price, released a handful of great exclusives, and gained some crucial ground on rival Sony. Remember Kinect? Me neither.
Microsoft reinforced that message in this year’s conference with some big, fan-friendly announcements and demonstrations, but also proved its previous missteps hadn't scared it into safe submission. Indie games shared the spotlight with colourful new exclusives this year, while the Microsoft HoloLens demonstration was a genuinely mindbending glimpse into a mad new future. If last year’s conference was all about shifting our perceptions of what the Xbox One was, this year’s was about carving out its creative identity into the future.
