The Last Guardian switched from a PlayStation 3 game to a PlayStation 4 title in 2012.
Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios, told IGN that The Last Guardian was running into technical problems on PlayStation 3 many years ago.
"Because of the limitation of the hardware performance, the team was doing their best ... but we knew — from a design standpoint — in order to run it on PS3, the team would have to make some compromises in terms of the number of characters and these things," Yoshida said.
But as Fumito Ueda and his team worked on The Last Guardian over the years, the PlayStation 4 started to come to fruition. Sony, Yoshida and Ueda then realized that the full potential of the adventure game could be realized if the title moved development to the newer home console.
