The creators behind Rocket League were “utterly flabbergasted” the first time they saw players dunk the ball into the goal from off the wall.
On the second episode of IGN Expert Mode, Psyonix Studios design director Corey Davis discusses one of the coolest skills that players came up with for Rocket League.
“The one that blew us away the most, I would say, people figured out that you can carry the ball up the wall … they figured out they can carry the ball up the wall, carry it off the wall while it’s still in control [at a high altitude] … and then dunk it into the goal at full speed,” he said while attempting to demonstrate the tactic.
So even though Psyonix made Rocket League, the team didn’t know everything that was possible in the game.
“We never anticipated that level of control in the air,” Davis said. “You know, you hit the ball in the air, but not to the point where you’re literally carrying it on your nose like a dolphin carrying a ball at SeaWorld or something.
“I think when we first saw that, we were just utterly flabbergasted.”
This type of mastery has led even us here at IGN to think about why Rocket League might be the perfect mainstream esport.
On top of that, Psyonix sees cross-network play as very important for Rocket League — as well as the industry as a whole. Opening up the game to new crowds and competition would likely lead to even newer ways of playing.
