Today Marks Harry Potter 19 Years Later Anniversary

Watch out for the threstrals.

All was well today at King's Cross Station.

Today, September 1, 2017, marks an important date in the Harry Potter universe — the date is the furtherest point in time covered by J.K. Rowling's original seven novels, as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' epilogue took place on this day. And fans around the world, as well as Rowling herself, are celebrating the memorable date.

The final chapter of the seven-book series finds Harry, Ron, and Hermione seeing their children off to school on the Hogwarts Express this very day. Jumping 19 years in time, the chapter catches up with Harry and Ginny who are married with three children, Hermione and Ron are married as well with two kids.

September 1, 2017 is the day Harry and Ginny's youngest child, Albus Severus Potter, is starting his time at Hogwarts, and the epilogue focuses on his worry about being sorted into Slytherin, and Harry's subsequent reassurance that he's named for a Slytherin, one of the bravest people Harry ever knew.

While more has been revealed about Harry, Ron, and Hermione's post-Deathly Hallows lives, particularly through Pottermore and the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, this final chapter was, for a time, the only glimpse at life after Hogwarts fans had of these three characters and what became of their lives. So to honor that date, Rowling tweeted out in commemoration with the hashtag #19YearsLater.

And while fans can't quite board the Hogwarts Express themselves, that hasn't stopped crowds of fans from gathering at King's Cross to celebrate the day. And stars from the film series, like Warwick Davis and Oliver Phelps, also noted the holiday on Twitter.

And in celebration to remind fans that Hogwarts will always be there to welcome them home, Pottermore has launched a new way of exploring the wizarding school. An interactive view of Hogwarts allows Pottermore users to explore 100 different landmarks of the school, each of which includes bits of description or quotes from the Harry Potter books.

Of course, the story of Albus Severus, as well as his classmates Rose Weasley and Scorpius Malfoy, continues in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which originally opened in London's West End in 2016. The play will be making its way to Broadway in New York City next year.

Back in December, the play's producers confirmed they were in the "final stages" of negotiations to bring the show to Broadway. The Cursed Child recently earned 11 nominations for the Olivier Awards, British theater's most prestigious accolade, making it the most nominated new play in British theater history. It's now tied with the recent West End production of Hairspray, which set the record in 2008. The Cursed Child's script is available in book form, and a trademark filed by Warner Bros. last July hinted that a film adaptation may be on the way, though Rowling refuted the rumors of a Cursed Child movie trilogy earlier this year.

The wizarding world will officially continue, however, via the next few films planned in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. Fantastic Beasts 2 recently began filming, with new plot and character details confirmed following the previous announcement that Jude Law would be playing Albus Dumbledore. The Fantastic Beasts sequel, which will be the second of five planned films, is due to hit theaters on November 18, 2018. David Yates is back to direct from a script by J.K. Rowling, and Yates has promised that the Paris-set film will “feel so different from” the first one.
