League of Legends - OPL Split 2 Finals
The OPL's second Split for 2017 ended this week as the two juggernauts of the scene, the Chiefs and the Dire Wolves, battled for the title, the prize money and the chance to represent our region at the Worlds in China. Game one jumped out to a poor start for The Chiefs as DW looked to make a statement — pitch perfect micro from Destiny and Shernfire and a few tiny strategic mistakes from the Chiefs quickly made things unwinnable for the boys in blue. Watch Shernfire tee up the rest of his squad in what would spell the beginning of the end of Game 1 for the Chiefs.
Instead of tilting, the Chiefs came out fighting in game two — and it quickly soured for them. EGym and Spookz over-extended just a touch early on and the Dire Wolves quickly seized the opportunities presented to create a statline which was dramatically similar to game one. Still staying professional, the Chiefs kept their cool and ground their way back into the game with a Rift Herald acquisition giving them breathing room. When Swip3rR's Gnar snagged three Wolves in one go, the momentum seemed to be shifting the other way — Shernfire had other ideas though. Watch game 2 slip from the Chiefs' grasp below.
Game 3 was the first game where the Chiefs weren't fighting uphill from the get-go, as both teams traded and the Chiefs repeated Finals experience seemed like it might be paying off. They were just shy of being swept but still cool as cucumbers as they put together play after play to dismantle the Dire Wolves. The game hinged on a teamfight at around 21 minutes where Spookz seemingly jumped the gun on his initiation, Shernfire dove in for the kill and the Chiefs somehow walked away with the kill (and Baron) anyway. Watch the Chiefs win game 3 to turn the score into 2-1 below.
Game four looked bad for the Dire Wolves early, as the Chiefs had shown a lot of staying power in their other games. With an even early game and similar team composition, the Chiefs were in a strong position to drag the series to a game five. Team Green had other ideas though, repeatedly finding Swiffer and slowing down Swip3rR as the game wore on. It was time for the Dire Wolves to show that they also have championship level stamina and composure, ignoring the loss of k1ng to pick off EGym and earn themselves a place at the World Championships. Watch the Dire Wolves win it all below.
CounterStrike - ROG Masters AU Qualifiers
The best teams in Australia spent the weekend duking it out for the chance to represent A/NZ in the ROG Regional Qualifiers, and Grayhound Gaming came out on top. Grayhound had a fantastic weekend in the ROG Masters, stomping their way through the winner's bracket as they made their way to the Finals. There, they took on Kings Gaming, who didn't have quite so easy a time. The Kings dropped to the loser's bracket when they faced Grayhound the first time, and from there had to overcome teams like Tainted Minds, Athletico and the Chiefs to earn a rematch. The end result — 3-1 in favour of Grayhound — doesn't represent how close the finals were, but the clip below where Grayhound played super conservatively to snatch the victory does.
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds - PUBGOCE CGL Qualifiers
The pro scene for PUBG is still in its infancy — hell, the game is still in Early Access — but some of the more competitive Aussies are putting the work in already to determine who is the best in our region. There's still no First Person servers in OC yet so the competition takes place in Third Person, but that makes it no less competitive. The Qualifiers for Season 2 ended this week in spectacular fashion as teams battled for placement in the upcoming Finals. Team Rank Tank took out the first game of the night in a showdown with Avoid the Zoid, essentially securing First Place for the Qualifiers. Colossal Velocity snagged game two, making up for a rough game prior. The real highlight was game three, where Team Benevolent's Extrude_NZ weathered an exploding vehicle only to light Colossal Velocity's members on fire to secure the win. It was a clutch play and some quick thinking, and you can see it happen below!
