It would seem that Shia LaBeouf's time in the Indiana Jones universe was short-lived, as David Koepp, the screenwriter of the planned fifth Indiana Jones film, has confirmed LaBeouf's character Mutt Williams is not in the script.
Koepp put it succinctly to Entertainment Weekly, saying, "Harrison plays Indiana Jones, that I can certainly say. And the Shia LaBeouf character is not in the film."
Koepp also said the movie could begin production soon and he hopes that Steven Spielberg, who has directed every Indiana Jones film, will make it his next project. "In terms of when we would start, I think that’s up to Mr. Spielberg and Mr. Ford," he explained, adding, "if the stars align, hopefully it’ll be his next film."
There had been talk that Harrison Ford, who has played Indiana Jones since Raiders of the Lost Ark, will eventually step away from the franchise to allow a younger actor to take up the lead. That seemed to be the point of the introduction of Williams in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. However, given that Crystal Skull was largely seen as a disappointment, and LaBeouf's criticism of Spielberg in the past, the absence of Mutt Williams from the project isn't all too surprising.
Indiana Jones 5 will be release in theaters on July 10, 2020. For more on beloved film franchise, find out why Steven Spielberg still thinks Temple of Doom is the worst Indy film.
