Mario + Rabbids Dev: Nintendo 'Open-minded' to New Ideas

Putting aside platforming for turn-based gun battles.

While Nintendo is protective of its franchises, Mario + Rabbids creative director Davide Soliani has found the company is "quite open-minded" to new ideas as long as the creative concept can be justified.

On the debut episode of IGN Expert Mode, Soliani shed light on the process that ultimately led to creation of a Mario game filled with an array of wacky weaponry.

When Ubisoft Milan set out to make a Mario-Rabbids crossover game, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto tasked the team with making a game that wasn't about Mario jumping. The studio embraced that challenge by proposing a game where Mario and his pals use guns.

Soliani noted that while it was "not an easy topic" address, Miyamoto embraced their concept the first time they presented it because the team could back it up with a compelling vision that worked within the Mario world. "Every time you are proposing something crazy to Nintendo, they are quite open-minded, but you need a good justification and a good logic to create something in the Mario universe," he explained.

In an interview at E3 2017, Miyamoto discussed why Ubisoft is such a great partner for Nintendo, saying, "Ubisoft is a company that really understands the Nintendo hardware and also understands the Nintendo customer."

With regard to embracing change for future projects at Nintendo, Miyamoto told IGN he believes "it's ideal if we can get old characters to do new things," but has "a little bit of hesitancy and resistance when someone's trying to overbearingly bring their thoughts in, and trying to create new characters over and over again."
