Legendary character actor Harry Dean Stanton has passed away at the age of 91. Though Stanton rarely had a starring role, he often made a memorable impact in his career, which spanned over 50 years and over 100 projects.
According to Variety, the actor died Friday from natural causes.
The strikingly thin, frequently intense actor began his career making westerns in the 1950s. However, as time went on he found himself making notable appearances in films such as Alien, Escape from New York, and Repo Man. In an unusual move for him, he also appeared as Molly Ringwald's father in Pretty in Pink.
Notably, in 1984 Stanton was given a leading role in Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas. Stanton was also a frequent collaborator with David Lynch, and he recently reprised his role from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, Carl Rodd, for Twin Peaks: The Return on Showtime. He also starred on HBO's Big Love.
Unfortunately, Stanton wasn't able to live long enough to see his most-recent film, Lucky, get released September 29. In the film, Stanton stars as a 90-year-old atheist seeking enlightenment. It will allow the late actor's many fans one final chance to see the man in action.
Esteemed critic Roger Ebert once said that no film featuring Stanton "can be altogether bad." Given how many films he appeared in over his illustrious career, that's a real testament to his power as an actor.
