GTA Online: How to Get the Most Out of Smuggler's Run

The Smuggler's Run update is the 19th major update for Grand Theft Auto Online.

This update focuses on an aircraft-based smuggling ring, run by you and "Nervous" Ron Jakowski. Players acquire and distribute contraband from their an aircraft hangar, which also serves as their cargo warehouse and customization workshop (if the player decides to purchase that particular upgrade).

The update also introduced a new Adversary Mode, Motor Wars, and two new cars: the Vapid Retinue and the Grotti Visione.

Smuggler's Run introduces Hangars that can be purchased on the Maze Bank Foreclosures (MBF) website, ranging from $1.2M at the cheapest to $5.7M for the priciest hangar with all available hangar upgrades.

Note that all hangars come with the same basic amenities and can house the same amount of aircraft.

Recommended Hangar: We recommend purchasing Hangar 3499, the eastern hangar at Ft Zancudo. While not the cheapest option, the low-level clearance to the military base is well worth the additional cost, as it eliminates the automatic 4-star wanted level normally placed on players trespassing on or flying over the base.

The most affordable hangar is right in the center of Los Santos International, and costs $1,200,000 on MBF.

This hangar at Los Santos International Airport costs $1,525,000 on MBF.

The hangar on the eastern end of Ft Zancudo costs $,2,085,000 on MBF. It also comes with low-level clearance to the base - players can enter so long as they don't have a wanted level or accost the guards.

The western hangar in Ft Zancudo comes with limited base access and costs $2,650,000 on MBF.

This central hangar is the most expensive location available, costing a base price of $3,250,000.

Hangars have multiple upgrade options, none of which are mandatory but all improve the experience of owning an airplane hangar. They can be added after purcahsing on the MBF website.

  •  Hangar Style:  $100,000 - $320,000
Change the decor, materials and color scheme of the hangar.
  •  Lighting: $50,000 - $95,000
Adds colored lighting to the hangar. Options dependent on decor.
  •  Floor Gr aphics: $95,0 00 - $200,000
Adds decals to the floor of your hangar.
  • Office Furniture: $195,000 - $280,000
Updates the style of the funishings in your hangar.
  • Living Quarters: $235,000 - $375,000
Add a traditionally appointed or modern-designed apartment.
  • Workshop: $1,150,000
Upgrade aircraft with various items like armor, weapons and countermeasures.

Running the Air-Freight smuggling ring with Ron is similar to operating a Motorcycle Club or the Import/Export business.

Smugglers complete Source missions for various types of cargo, some of which will be better defended than others. Tobacco and Alcohol, for example, will rarely have the same level of security around a shipment that Narcotics or Medical Supplies would.

Each unit of cargo is worth $10,000, and each player on your team can carry one case. Up to four crates can be acquired per sourcing mission, provided that your team has at least that many players.

If you're playing solo, you're only going to receive $10,000 worth of cargo per Sourcing mission - so play with as many teammates as you can in order to maximize efficiency.

Once you complete enough sourcing missions that you want to make a sale, the Sell screen of the Air Freight business will display how much of each type of contraband you have, and how much of a bonus the buyer is willing to give you.

The standard rule for GTA Onliine businesses - that other players can steal/destroy your cargo - still applies, and you'll receive an additional bonus for making sales in sessions with a higher number of rival CEOs or MC Presidents.

There are varying stackable bonuses that apply when selling specific amounts of the various types of cargo:

  • +5%: 5 crates of Tobacco & Alcohol or Counterfeit Goods.
  • +12%: 10 crates of Arts & Antiques, Animal Materials or Jewelry & Gemstones
  • +35%: 25 crates of Narcotics, Medical Supplies or Chemicals.
