Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata has confirmed his team has attempted to run the game's underlying tech on Nintendo Switch, but didn't get the desired results.
Speaking to DualShockers, Tabata explained that his team had tested the game's Luminous Engine on the Switch but couldn't “bring out the most of the engine”.
That's not to say a port categorically can't happen - Tabata also made clear that no specific optimisations had been made to account for the Switch's power (which could allow for the full game to run) - but no further tests have been made as yet.
It seems far more likely that Switch will receive the episodic Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition beginning on mobile platforms this Fall, a move Tabata has told us certainly has "a chance" of happening.
That might be no bad thing - having gone hands-on with the first episode at PAX West, we called the chibi-style demake Pocket Edition such an exact remake that it feels surreal.
That project could mark the end of the over decade-long development of XV - Tabata recently told us that, "at the end of the year, I think we do have to have a drawing of the line and moving on to do the next project."
