Drew Goddard has been tapped by Fox to direct X Force, the upcoming superhero flick set in the X-Men universe, centred on Cable and Deadpool.
Deadline reports that Goddard will begin directing the flick, based on a script that has reportedly been written by Ryan Reynolds and Joe Carnahan (The Grey), as soon as he finishes up Bad Times at the El Royale with Chris Hemsworth and Jeff Bridges.
This is Goddard's second chance at helming a big superhero movie for Fox. The ex-Daredevil showrunner and Cabin in the Woods director was originally going to direct the Spider-Man villain spinoff the Sinister Six, until that movie was canned when Fox struck the Spidey deal with Marvel (learn about his vision for that movie).
X Force will centre on Reynold's Deadpool and Josh Brolin's Cable, and like the Deadpool movies, will be harder and more mature than its X-Men counterparts. It's a passion project for Reynolds - nearly a year ago, Reynolds said making an X-Force film was his top priority.
Reynolds and Brolin are both currently working on Deadpool 2, and revealed the first official look of Brolin's Cable. Simon Kinberg will reportedly direct the next mainline X-Men movie Supernova, which is rumored to focus on the Dark Phoenix storyline.
