Uzumaki and Uchiha, at it again.
Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow.
Sarada’s arc may have ended last week, but this week’s Boruto feels like a bonus episode, giving us one more story featuring the Uchiha child (and her forgotten friend, Boruto). Their squabble doesn’t provide the same excitement of the past episodes, but it does offer an entertaining backdrop to an otherwise story-heavy episode.
“Boruto and Sarada” opens with Boruto and his classmates discussing the upcoming Kage Summit, which will be taking place in Konoha. Boruto expresses his disinterest, and exchanges some barbs with Sarada upon learning she plans to become Hokage herself. Following the end of Sarada’s arc, it’s nice to get one last look at her new ambitions as well as a deeper look at her and Boruto’s relationship, which already has flashes of Naruto and Sasuke albeit with a twist.
Following her revelatory journey, Sarada has become a mix of both Sasuke and Naruto. She has clear aspirations of becoming Hokage, and has the skills to do it thanks to her Uchiha heritage. Boruto falls a little closer to his own family tree, boasting and causing trouble for his elders (even defacing the Hokage Rock just like Naruto did some 700 episodes prior). His character falls a little flat when compared to the more complex and fully realized Sarada, but hopefully a little friendly competition can help him grow to become a worthy rival for the young Uchiha.
Once Sarada and Boruto’s quarrel has run its course we move onto to the beginning of the Five Kage Summit, which has a very different feel from the grave meeting we saw in the Land of Iron. This meeting was more like a Hollywood red carpet, with Metal and Iwabe geeking out over seeing the Kage arrive. Just like everything else in the Shinobi world, it seems the Kage have changed. They’re now treated more like celebrities than feared warriors. Metal’s adoration drives this point home, but also serves as a great chance for the show to remind everyone who the current Kage are.
Things turn more serious as the Kage Summit begins with Naruto and Shikamaru filling the other leaders in on their troubling findings, warning that there might be a greater threat than Kaguya on the horizon. This seems to be a setup for the next arc, but it’s still one I find a little hard to buy into as a Naruto fan. I know that shows like this need increasingly threatening enemies to remain interesting, but it’s difficult to imagine anyone more powerful than the progenitor of all chakra. Convincing me that she has been surpassed by someone else will be difficult, but I am open to seeing what Boruto has in store for the Ninja World.
The Verdict
The Uchiha family story is a hard act to follow, but “Boruto and Sarada” lets us down easy with a fun story involving two of the series most important characters. The Kage Summit tidily reintroduces some important characters, and hints at a mysterious threat on the horizon. Will the next generation be ready to face that threat? We can only wait and see.
